Is An Adventure Session Right For You?

What exactly is an adventure session?

Take a minute and think about your favorite place to explore outdoors. Maybe it’s a place you’ve been to a hundred times, or maybe it’s somewhere new you’ve been dying to discover. Now think about adding an afternoon or a full day experience with your partner where you unwind, adventure, and just have a little fun in front of the camera. This is the heart of what an adventure session truly is.

“Does it have to be this grandiose experience?”

Absolutely not! Every couple is unique in what their personality together is. Some love to take a full day to explore mountain trails. Others prefer to take some time at an easy-to-get-to overlook and just take in the sights. And still, there are others who enjoy strolling along rolling hills just taking in the sunset after a long day. Whatever your thing is, keep it true to you. That’s what’s most important. You don’t want to push yourselves too much over the brink.

“What if we’ve never hiked or aren’t much of explorers?”

If hiking isn’t for you or you love to be outside but are more of a city dweller, then an adventure session may not be for you. There are many couples who prefer to have a date night photoshoot around a downtown area instead. Their vibe includes dinner, drinks, and taking in the city under the sun, or street lights. And that’s ok! Don’t force yourself into a mold you don’t fit just because everyone else might be doing it. Your photos will show how uncomfortable and out of place you feel. You also don’t want to give off a false representation of who you are as a couple.

“How do I go about putting together an adventure photoshoot?”

This is where your photographer is your lifeline. They are there to guide you along the way with the research and knowledge you need before embarking on such a wild, but joyful experience. The first step to all of this is finding the photographer that is right for you.

Are you looking for a full day of exploration with strenuous trails and inconsistent lighting? Make sure you find a photographer who is used to hiking long distances and is comfortable with elevation changes. They should also know how to take photos in many different lighting situations like full sun, cloudiness/fog, or an evening glow. On top of that, they need to know how to edit those photos to produce consistent work.

Are you more in the realm of short and sweet with a beautiful backdrop, but not a lot of hiking? Find a photographer who knows the area well enough to find that easy-but-breathtaking short trail. If you found a great photographer who isn’t local to the area but you love their editing, then make sure they know how to go about researching the area and finding exactly what you’re looking for. Google Earth is their friend.

I cannot stress it enough…

Each photographer is unique and has their own work flow. Make sure you find the one you most connect with and who’s work aligns with your vision. If my style and approach resonates with you, I’d love to hear from you. Let’s connect and begin creating the perfect session tailored just for you!
