Some elopements are quiet, some are wild. This one was both.
A + S had the exact vision for their adventure elopement day locked in more than a year in advance and knew exactly what they wanted. Traveling all the way from Australia, they were planning a two-week honeymoon after their vows. They would take a road-trip through the western United States in a camper van and explore some of the country’s most iconic national parks. From there they would be heading off to the islands of Hawaii and Fiji. Needless to say, with such an adventurous trip in mind I knew I had to match their energy by planning something just as epic for their outdoor elopement.
To start, they wanted to say their vows inside a chapel before heading out. This way they could have a more intimate, still environment for their elopement day without having to worry about finding the perfect spot for the ceremony.
The chapel they chose was bright, airy, and minimal. It was a calm and intentional setting that stood in bold contrast to the rugged adventure that would later follow. This was a moment of stillness and reflection. They could fully take in every detail, glance, quiet kiss, and soak in their meaningful elopement vows to one another.
Once the ceremony was over and tears were shed, we packed up and headed west to the Red Rock Canyon National Preservation. This is where we would enjoy formal portraits and a little bit of storytelling. The trail to get to our spot was short with some elevation gain but nothing strenuous. A + S wanted their adventure elopement to feel elevated and elegant, without having to hike miles in bulky boots. The bride brought a pair of comfortable shoes for navigating the terrain and tackling a bit of climbing when needed. As soon as we reached a scenic spot, she’d slip right back into her heels. There were even a few brave, bold moments where she chose to keep her heels on! Luckily the groom was there as her steady support.
Throughout the day, we kept a close eye on the weather. With clouds drifting in and out, we knew the classic golden sunset might not show up and rain was a possibility. Thankfully the rain held off and the cloud cover actually worked in our favor. It created soft, even light that made for beautifully clean images. At one point, we got lucky with the sun breaking through just enough to cast a gentle glow on the couple. It gave us a few dreamy adventurous elopement shots (one of which you’ll notice I added a little creative twist).
Every detail in their attire and accessories felt thoughtfully ‘them’. They kept things minimal with a few unexpected touches. The groom’s vest and coat lining featured a bold, vibrant pattern with added personality. The bride included delicate pearls to her veil and shoes, creating a soft, elegant contrast. Their vow books were a beautiful, simplistic touch. And as a deeply personal bonus, each of their wedding bands was engraved with the other’s name. Their connection and love for another stood out in every single detail of their adventure elopement.
In true celebration of the day (and to match the energy of their adventure elopement), A + S also brought along a bottle of champagne to pop and savor. In an effort to keep things safe and leave no trace, they skipped the glassware and opted for plastic champagne flutes. The views were stunning, the experience unforgettable. And as the session unfolded, they fully relaxed into the momentum of the day and let their guard down. With adrenaline high, they embraced every intimate pause and weren’t afraid to get playful and a little silly in-between. That’s how you know it’ll last, when you can truly laugh at yourselves. 😉
As our session wrapped up, and completely unaware of the time, we hopped in our cars and drove away from the trail. We stopped spontaneously to capture some free-spirited running shots along the road just outside the park. Just as if on cue, the sun broke through once more, giving us the perfect light to end the evening. A + S were the kind of couple you dream of photographing. They were fun-loving, laid-back, and fully present in every moment of their adventure elopement. The views, the energy, and their connection made every second completely worth it. And I’ll always feel comfort in just knowing that their relationship is built with a strong foundation meant to last.
